Hosting Ivan and Helen for dinner on Friday night was an Asian culinary disaster in my opinion, way below the standards which I expected, and definitely not a decent reply to Ivan's French fare two nights before that. But the sweet and sour fish and stirfried chinese leafs seemed to do for them, what Ivan's pan-seared trout and lyonnaise potatoes did for me, and perhaps all was fair and well eventually. Most memorable was the across-the-board conversation that we had over post-dinner drinks. Such a wide range of topics were laid down over the dinner table, from cuisines to politics to civilisations to conservation to dancing (but of course, you would've expected that surely!) to cultures, and more. From a most unlikely of dinners came a very intriguing dialogue, and I think we most probably shall see many more of such dinners and philosophical discourses in the years to come.. :)
Meanwhile, a bright spot in the midst of the exam gloom, in the form of a birthday lunch for ZZ in the exam weekend (right after the Cells Practical paper no less!), at a sweet little pub by the riverside just out of town.. :)

According to ZZ, the resident chef used to be a protege of Jamie Oliver. And the dish on display sure tasted as great as it looked!

Happy birthday to the dear birthday girl.. :)
