Another late night in the mess, and huddled on high-topped barstools round a silvered table, they talked. And allowing the conversation topics to flow along a random stream of rambling incoherence, they found a measure of each other in between the dreadful wailings of less-than-competent karaoke wannabes among their colleagues. As she spoke, he listened, and vice versa in return, and although the exchange bordered on casual at times, it never did prove irrelevant.
